As business environment at ferrous metals markets constantly changes, the specialists of the plant are looking for the ways to raise competitiveness of products manufactured by metallurgists of Serov. For this purpose new technologies are being developed and introduced at Metallurgical plant n/ a A.K. Serov, they are aimed at maintaining steady operation of the plant, improving the quality of rolled metal, increasing labor productivity and satisfying growing customers requirements. The specialists of the plant conducted a number of research works, some of them have been implemented and have already brought benefits.

Development and implementation of technology of agglomerate production from charge material of Turinskiy mine with a high concentrate content

The main iron ore raw materials of the plant are the ores with a high content of sulfur - up to 3,3% and low content of iron extracted from Severopeschanskiy deposit of Bogoslovskoe mine administration. It is possible to reduce the content of sulfur in charge material of agglomeration factory by means of wet magnetic separation of iron ore raw materials of Bogoslovskoe mine administration and obtaining finely ground concentrate of 0,017 mm. where the content of sulfur is less than 0,5% and the content of iron is 65%. Laboratory tests of strength properties of agglomerate obtained from charge material consisting of finely ground concentrate were carried out in an experimental sinter pot at agglomeration factory. It was found out that it is possible to obtain agglomerate from this charge material. At the present time the work is carried on.

Extraction of zinc from the blast-furnace using dry blowing-down

As zinc-containing iron ore raw materials (agglomerate, Zn up to 0,03%) that make zinc accumulate in the furnace body and incrust the sides of stack, throat and offtake come to blast-furnaces, the problem of zinc removal has arisen. The technology of partial removal of zinc - dry blowing-down -was developed and tested at the blast-furnace #3. Dry blowing-down allows to withdraw zinc circulating in the upper circuit of the furnace. Using this method it became possible to restore technical and economic indices of furnace performance. This technology has been implemented at the plant.

Development of blast-furnace smelting technology using lean coal

Lack of backing coal and constant grow of prices for coke is the reason for looking for the ways of using less expensive fuel. One of the ways is partial substitution of coke with lean coal. Nowadays it is one of the foreground methods of cast iron cost reduction. The work in the following direction was performed in two stages. At the first stage the specialists estimated the possibility of substituting coke by coal, considered the influence of coal on blast-furnace smelting, thermal rate and slag adjustment, and developed a coal charging system. At the second stage the specialists tested the strength properties of coal. Coal was tested for strength in regular conditions and was heated up to 1000°C along the grain and edgeways. The quantity of coal charged was 32 kg/t of cast iron. A substantial economical effect was achieved.

Implementation of out-of-furnace steel treatment technology

In June 2003 an out-of-furnace steel treatment plant was put into operation at the open-hearth plant. Commissioning of this equipment made it possible to raise the volume of steel production, reduce the number of defective products manufactured at open-hearth plant and to spare ferroalloys. In 2004 the research aimed at improvement of out-of-furnace steel treatment technology was continued. As a result the feeding of slag-forming material and granulated aluminum for preliminary deoxidization was increased as well as the duration of blowing-down metal with argon. By means of treatment the quantity of nonmetallic inclusions in steel was reduced as well as the number of defective products. The work is carried out.

Testing of blowing lances in ladles


As the out-of-furnace steel treatment plant was put into operation, the specialists conducted commercial tests of ladles for blowing-down the steel with argon at out-of-furnace steel treatment plant. The best results were recorded when blowing lances produced by OAO "Dinur" were applied. The average operating time of purging plug made up 2119 minutes (producer's guarantee is 1500 minutes), herewith the average performance of plug made up 41 melting. The work conducted allowed to select the blowing lances of best quality essential for securing trouble-free operation of the ladle furnace.

Testing of refractory concrete Suprafest ST4 in liquid lining of steel-casting ladles

The technology of production of liquid working lining for the sides and bottom of steel ladles for out-of-furnace steel treatment plant using refractory concrete Suprafest ST4 has been developed. The average lining performance between midlife repairs amounted to 65 fillings. Using refractory concrete Suprafest ST4 in liquid lining allowed to improve its performance considerably and increase the interrepair time for steel ladles. The work is in progress.

Introduction of SHENK crane scales

In 2004 SHENK scales were installed at casting cranes of open-hearth plant, that made it possible to obtain information about the weight of metal in a ladle during casting. Special tables for regular distribution of metal in siphons were developed to reduce the mass of short molding. The work has been introduced. Testing of refractory furniture for slide gates of RUS-60 type

The specialists conducted a number of industrial tests of refractories for slide gates of RUS-60 type produced by the following refractory plants: OAO "Shiber", OAO "Ogneupory", Bogdanovichi and OAO "Magnesit Combine". The quality of sliding plates produced by OAO "Ogneupory" and OAO "Magnesit Combine" is lower in comparison with OAO "Shiber" plates. The quality of nozzles and nozzles of collectors produced by OAO "Ogneupory" meets the requirements of the technology. The work is continued.

Testing of MAYERTON alumino-periclase-carboneous refractories

MAYERTON alumino-periclase-carboneous refractories in the bottom of steel ladle were tested. The results are satisfactory.

It is recommended to use these refractories in combination with alumino-periclase-carboneous refractories usually applied for lining of sides of steel ladles.

The technology of blowing-down hot iron in the ladle of the casthouse with argon has been introduced.

Hot iron blowing-down with argon through porous plug in the casting ladle was performed. As the result of hot iron blowing-down the strength of SPHN-60 rolls has increased, and the number of defects of rolls in pipe and gas cavities was reduced. The annual economic effect made up 1273,58 ths. rubles as a result of introduction of this technology. In the current year the work is being carried out.

Treatment of Slit-technology elements in the manufacture of reinforcing steel

A research work on possibility of separation of a band under rolling in roll passes at finishing and pre-finishing stands of the mill "320" (Slit-technology) has been conducted for the purpose of increasing the mill production output. A special dressing of rolls of the finishing roll line of mill "320" was developed, a test rolling of blooms of 140 mm dia. was performed and double reinforcing steel of 14 mm. dia. was obtained. This work that showed the possibility of increasing the mill "320" production output is carried out.
